ENERGY SAVING TIPS TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR "DAY TO DAY" LIVING EXPENSES

Obviously, with a name like Green Cottage Industries, authorized distributor for our flagship product, the Cool-N-Save AC Misting System, which will save you up to 30% on the electrical cost of running your air conditioning, we are into saving money, energy and reducing energy consumption. The energy saving tips we offer here, when applied on a "day to day" basis, will help reduce your energy consumption every day!

1. Conservative Operation of Your Central HVAC System.

This system is the number one energy consuming device you have in your home. It functions in all seasons of the year. In the summer it is your air conditioner; in the winter it is your heat source.  Here are some tips on how to operated this system in the most efficient manner possible.  These systems have a filter that is designed to keep dust particles and debris from collecting on the condensing coil, and fins of your HVAC system. It is very important to change or clean this filter every 30 days. If you neglect to change this filter or clean it, the results will be that your condensing coil and fins will become encrusted with dust; dirt and debris, like in the pictures to the right, reducing the heat transfer process, thereby increasing the energy need to operate the compressor for longer periods of time and turn on more frequently, to accomplish the necessary heat transfer process, thereby costing more money! If your condensing coil is already dirty, just follow the directions below to effectively clean your condensing coil and or fins properly and safely.

An old hairbrush works well for brushing surface dirt and lint off the fins. Brush in the same direction as the slots between the fins so the bristles go between the fins. You can do a better job if you remove the guard grill, which protects the coil. Wear a dust mask to avoid breathing the dust. When you've finished brushing out as much of the dirt as you can, spray a heavy-duty household cleanser into the coils. Let the cleanser sit for five minutes. Then, direct a light spray from a garden hose at the coil's interior through the fan opening in the top of the unit. Use a gentle spray because a strong spray could bend the aluminum fins.

Follow these tips to save on energy costs

  • Install these energy-efficient measures:
    • Replace and recycle your old refrigerator and purchase energy-efficient models. Units only 10 years old can use twice as much electricity as a new ENERGY STAR® labeled model.
    • Insulate ceilings to R-38 levels if your attic has less than R-19.
    • Caulk windows, doors and anywhere air leaks in or out. Do not caulk around water heater and furnace exhaust pipes.
    • Weatherstrip around windows and doors.
    • Wrap heating and cooling ducts with duct wrap, or use mastic sealant.
    • Install energy-saver shower heads.
  • When buying new appliances, be sure to purchase energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® labeled models.
  • If your old air conditioner is on its way out replace it with ENERGY STAR® labeled energy-efficient model.

Set the water heater thermostat at 140 degrees or "normal." If you       have a dishwasher. Otherwise, set it at 120 degrees or "low." Check your dishwasher to see if you can use 120 degree water.

Thermostats control the Money you spend on energy "Minute by Minute"

Another controllable facet of this system is the thermostat. The thermostat sets the air temperature in your home. It has long been accepted that the most comfortable setting to have your thermostat set on is 72 F degrees, in both summer and winter. Well, with a little sacrifice on your part, you can save big time on the cost of operating your HVAC system, in both winter and summer.  Turning down the thermostat in cold weather, and inching it up during the warm months, can save as much as 3-5 percent for each degree of adjustment. In fact, as much as 60 percent of your energy bill, may be heating and cooling related. Check out our Programmable Thermostat on our Energy Saving Products page..

Here are some additional Energy Saving Tips that can be simply applied in anyone's home to save Money!

  • Shade your east and west facing windows to prevent the most brutal heat intrusion during summer months. And if your house doesn’t already possess dual-pane energy-efficient windows, why not start replacing those windows slowly, but start with those that receive the most intense sun exposure first?
  • Saving heat generating activities such as dishwashers and cooking until the evening hours can help you ease up on cooling costs as well as your local energy grid.
  • Using ceiling fans to move air on low speeds can permit you to push the thermostat in either direction, providing more circulation of either cool or warm air.

  • Fix defective plumbing or dripping faucets. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month. That not only increases water bills, but also increases the gas or electric bill for heating the water.
  • Wash only full loads in a dishwasher and use the shortest cycle that will get your dishes clean. If operating instructions allow, turn off the dishwasher before the drying cycle, open the door and let the dishes dry naturally.
  • Defrost refrigerators and freezers before ice buildup becomes 1/4-inch thick.
  • Close the damper when the fireplace is not being used. Try not to use the fireplace and central heating system at the same time.
  • Use compact fluorescent lamps. You can lower your lighting bill by converting to energy-efficient low-wattage compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures.
  • Replace old windows with new high performance dual pane windows.
